Margaret Mullane, Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, is delivering on her promise to create a new model of politics.
Over the last six months Margaret has been in regular contact with former US President Barak Obama’s community organiser guru, Arnie Graf on the best ways to engage and involve local community groups to help shape priorities for action. The launch event took place at the Mardyke Community Centre on Saturday 29 April with over 50 people representing community groups across the whole constituency from Marks Gate to Wennington.
Frank and lively discussions took place and what emerged as priority local issues to be tackled were concerns about crime and the need for more visible policing, lack of genuinely affordable homes for local people, a general perception of the area in terms of untidiness and the need for investment in local infrastructure such as health and community facilities.
The successful event is being followed up with a second meeting for community groups at the end of June where plans will be shared for how to tackle the key issues and call on the local community to lead on the actions.
Margaret Mullane who organized and led this said “People have become fed up with being told what they should or shouldn’t be concerned about by politicians. That’s why so many have turned away from civic life and even from voting. I want to make sure that I put our community at the heart of the political process – empowering them so that everyone has a part to play in building the Dagenham and Rainham of the future.”
