In response to rising violent crime and anti-social behaviour across transport hubs in Dagenham & Rainham, Margaret Mullane, Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate launched the ‘Bring Back Our Bobbies’ campaign back in June 2023.
After thousands of discussions with local people and even more petition signatures, this week the Metropolitan Police have announced a nine-officer team to focus on issues at Dagenham Heathway. The team will consist of 1 sergeant, 4 constables, and 4 PCSOs.
On Tuesday 30 January the team started a 14-day period of intense police action at Dagenham Heathway. Margaret Mullane met with the team as they visited local businesses and spoke with the public. The 14 days of action will be in conjunction with the Local Authority and then the police will form a forward plan for the area.
Margaret Mullane said: “This is what people power looks like. The situation at Dagenham Heathway was becoming a daily nightmare for business owners and local residents. So, to announce a new dedicated police team this week was a real victory for the whole area. The ‘Bring Back Our Bobbies’ campaign has gone from strength to strength, and whilst falling short of a permanent police base, the visible presence of nine officers will go a long way to deter the crime at Dagenham Heathway.
Onward and upwards, the aim of the ‘Bring Back Our Bobbies’ campaign was to see visible policing returned to all of our transport hubs in Dagenham & Rainham. In the coming weeks I will be launching the next leg of my campaign. We have achieved so much together as a community over the years, and I am incredibly proud to have delivered another win alongside local people.”
