Margaret Mullane, Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, has been taking part in Labour’s Conference in Liverpool.
Speaking at a fringe event focussing on practical ways to ‘break the class ceiling’ so that more people from ordinary working families can get involved in shaping their communities through politics. Margaret talked of her own experience working as a barmaid, in a call centre, and working full time whilst studying for a degree before turning to politics. She argued for better support to ensure that working class voices are heard in town halls and in parliament.
Following the speech from Labour Leader, Keir Starmer, Margaret said: “I was reassured and pleased that a Labour Government will bring forward a community policing guarantee pledging to ensure that every part of the country has more police officers and PCSOs – giving communities a named officer they can get in touch with. This is what I have been campaigning for in Dagenham & Rainham, so I was pleased to see a national Labour commitment to ‘bring back our bobbies’.”
Margaret went on to comment: “There was frank realism from Keir Starmer, that putting right the chaos caused by 13 years under a disastrous Tory government will be tough. He set out the clear priorities to bring about a decade of national renewal.
The strong commitment to devolve power and resources from Westminster to local communities is definitely the right approach. I have much more trust in locally elected councillors and Mayors to properly understand and respond to problems in their towns and cities than faceless bureaucrats in Whitehall.
My determination is to work hard to secure a Labour victory so I can help deliver the benefits of a stronger economy for all people across Dagenham and Rainham.”
