This week Margaret Mullane MP signed the Early Day Motion (EDM 150) regarding Football ticket prices. This was tabled by Ian Lavery MP and notes that despite the cost-of-living crisis and football clubs, particularly in the Premier League, earning more from broadcasting and commercial income; ticket prices for the 2024/25 season have been increased above inflation for 19 of the 20 PL clubs.
A significant number of Premier League clubs are also abolishing or restricting the concession ticketing that was previously offered. This includes the over 65's, the Under 21/18 tickets, and disabled tickets. The reality now is that parents must pay the price of a full ticket to take their children to games. This is serving to put the cost of football beyond many loyal supporters and effectively pricing them out of the game.
Margaret Mullane MP commented: "These issues affect a significant number of my constituents. It is about fairness, about the impact on communities, and about the "emotional owners" of their clubs having a real say in the pricing of entry to games. The EDM asks for the Independent Regulator of English Football (IREF) to be involved in ticket pricing policies with genuine supporter representation in discussion. Importantly, it also calls for a review of concessionary rates – to me this is vital in order to keep football accessible and to continue inspiring the next generation through the experience of live football matches."
Furthermore, the EDM calls for a minimum number of season tickets and general admission tickets, opposition to any competitive domestic league or cup games being played abroad and resistance to any attempt to bring dynamic pricing into football.
As the Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham, Margaret has pledged to follow the progress of the EDM and will endeavour to make representations should the opportunity arise.
