My commitment to fight to end the Launders Lane crisis

Margaret Mullane reflected on her local priority of securing relief for local residents from the Arnolds Field fires and pollution four months after being elected as the Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham.

Margaret commented “Residents in the Upminster Road North area and parts of Rainham village have suffered years of distress and damage to health from the ongoing fires at the Launders Lane site. I gave a firm pledge before being elected to do everything I can to get a resolution to this crisis and try to get redress for the suffering caused. This is a pledge I am determined to honour.”

Since the July General Election Margaret has taken the campaign to the House of Commons by raising Launders Lane in a debate and has met with a campaigning firm of solicitors as well as meeting with the Borough Fire Brigade Commander and a senior Fire Brigade Union official.

Margaret further added “I will continue to raise the scandal of Launders Lane in Parliament to bring pressure to bear. I have also held a meeting with Thompsons Solicitors to explore ways that residents whose health has been adversely affected can get redress. These are the solicitors who acted for former workers at the Cape Asbestos factory in Barking. I am being kept informed of the discussions between Havering Council and the landowner on his proposals to develop Arnolds Field. My view is that if these plans can provide the answer to safely deal with the problem and put an end to the misery suffered by residents, then I urge both parties to get on with it as quickly as possible. If that is not the case, then I will be pressing the Council and Environment Agency to come up with a sustainable solution, I will be prepared to work alongside them.

Beyond this, I have been engaged with the Havering Council leadership on the need to improve their communications with residents to issue quick and comprehensive notifications when there is smoke pollution that will be a risk to health. ”
