The Metropolitan Police has announced it will be taking steps to improve public safety and reduce the presence of dangerous weapons on our streets.
From 1st July to 31st July, the Met will be taking part in the national Ninja Sword Surrender Scheme, introduced as part of the new Home Office legislation. This is a coordinated effort alongside all police forces in England and Wales, designed to support safer neighbourhoods for all.
An amendment to Section 141 of the Criminal Justice Act will come into effect on 1st August 2025, making it illegal to manufacture, sell, hire, loan, import, or possess certain newly classified offensive weapons, including Ninja Swords, defined as short, bladed weapons with curved or straight edges. Throughout July, constituents will be able hand in Ninja Swords safely and anonymously at 22 designated police stations across London. All police stations can still accept surrendered weapons, but these 22 hubs are intended to be convenient access points across boroughs to minimise travel.
They are:
Action Police Station
Bethnal Green Police Station
Brixton Police Station
Bromley Police Station
Charing Cross Police Station
Chingford Police Station
Colindale Police Station
Croydon Police Station
Dagenham Police Station
Edmonton Police Station
Hammersmith Police Station
Hayes Police Station
Islington Police Station
Lavender Hill Police Station
Lewisham Police Station
Plumstead Police Station
Stoke Newington Police Station
Stratford Police Station
Sutton Police Station
Twickenham Police Station
Walworth Police Station
Wembley Police Station
Anyone surrendering a ninja sword will receive a £5 payment from the Home Office, with higher compensation available if they can prove ownership prior to 27th March 2025. We know not everyone feels comfortable visiting a police station. The Home Office has partnered with community organisations to provide additional alternatives for the safe disposal of knives:
Mobile Surrender Van – 1st July to 31st July:
Operated by Faz Amnesty on behalf of the Home Office, the van will visit various boroughs to collect knives directly from the public. The Met is supporting this initiative by ensuring safe disposal of collected items. [Click here to view Van locations and schedule]
Expansion of Knife Bins – from 1st July onwards
The Home Office is funding new knife bin installations, delivered in partnership with Word4Weapons. Again, the Met will support disposal processes. [Click here for bin locations – scroll down to Annex B]
