Margaret Mullane, Labour PPC for Dagenham and Rainham, has reacted to figures revealed by the Tory Government on cuts in policing. The Home Office last week released to Parliament actual numbers showing the cuts to police strength across England and Wales.
Margaret commented “We keep hearing Tory claims that they are bringing in more Police to make up for the loss of numbers since 2010, well the cat is well and truly out of the bag. Last week the true picture was revealed when the Home Office was forced to give actual numbers.
Across London in 2023 we had 1215 full time Police Community Support Officers, that is a massive 32% reduction on the number London had in 2015. In the last year alone there have been 611 officers cut. These PCSOs not only perform vital policing work in local communities, but as the numbers are cut by the Government it means that experienced Police Officers become ever more stretched to cover the duties and roles.
The Home Office report went on to show that since the Tories came to power in 2010, PCSO strength has been slashed to oblivion, dropping a staggering 7,651 across England and Wales.”
Margaret added “Keeping people and communities safe is the utmost priority for Government, these figures from the Home Office show complete failure. The country urgently needs a change of direction that will come from a new Government, one that I am determined to play a part in.”
