Margaret Mullane, Labour’s PPC for Dagenham and Rainham has issued her commitment to work to seriously tackle homelessness, not issue cruel and inaccurate statements to grab headlines.
With homelessness growing to crisis levels nationally and its impacts being felt locally in Barking & Dagenham and Havering, Margaret has vowed to work for the implementation of the priorities recommended by Shelter to ease the situation.
Margaret said “I was appalled by the heartless comments from the recent Home Secretary, Ms Braverman, stating that homelessness and rough sleeping is a lifestyle choice and calling for charities to be forced to stop providing tents for shelter to desperate people. Not only is this cruel but it shows she has no understanding of the wholly dysfunctional housing market that her Tory Government has presided over during the last 13 years.
If I am fortunate enough to be elected to Parliament to serve Dagenham and Rainham I will be working for the implementation of the four key priorities identified by Shelter:
Build a new generation of social rented council homes
Make private renting affordable
Raise the standard of private rented homes
Improve housing rights for renters and leaseholders and help with enforcement
These are the practical ways to tackle homelessness and end rough sleeping”.
Margaret added “At this time of year when we remember and pay tribute to those people who served this country in the armed forces, I think we should also remember that among those desperate people sleeping rough in our towns and cities there will be ex armed service men and women. The Royal British Legion estimate that around 5% of homeless people have an armed forces background. That’s despite Councils, including Barking & Dagenham and Havering, having adopted housing prioritisation for veterans, some slip through that safety net and end up rough sleeping on our streets. I certainly think that this Home Secretary should reflect on that fact.”
