Margaret Mullane MP was recently contacted by the Post Office in regard to the vital role our Postmasters play in communities across the UK. Post Offices are of great support to constituents in Dagenham and Rainham.
1. Enabling Small Business Growth: Besides the 65 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs that Post Office supports in Dagenham and Rainham, post offices are a vital enabler of local SMEs. Nearly three in ten SMEs use a Post Office branch at least once a week, while more than half use Post Office at least once a month. This highlights how post offices serve as an important, unseen part of the UK’s underlying economic infrastructure. In fact, post offices in Dagenham and Rainham are estimated to have an overall economic impact of £7.8m each year to the local area thanks to their role in catalysing local economic activity.
2. Sustaining Our High Streets- While virtually every other retailer has shrunk its physical footprint over the last decade, the Post Office network has remained stable at over 11,500 branches as an essential part of the British high street. In fact, each month some 79.9k customers use the post offices in Dagenham and Rainham, whether to post a letter, pay a bill, or withdraw some cash.
3. Providing Access to Cash & Banking: With nearly 1 in 8 constituencies having either one or no bank branches left, access to cash and banking is a growing challenge. At the same time, cash remains a vital part of social fabric and economy in the UK – whether for small businesses, consumers or the elderly and vulnerable. On average over £11.2m in cash is withdrawn and deposited in post offices in Dagenham and Rainham each month.
The Post Office is also the sole operator of the over 60 Banking Hubs that have been rolled out across the UK to date.
Margaret Mullane MP: “I thank the Post Office for their continued support for my constituents, particularly with the continuing bank closures over Dagenham and Rainham. With this being said, I will be meeting with “LINK”- a UK ATM provider following another bank closure in the constituency. It is vital individuals have access to cash and banking. I will keep residents updated as to the outcome of the meeting.”
