The Evidence and Insight Team in the Mayor of London Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) is undertaking a piece of research looking at victim attrition. From the past London Rape Reviews, London Stalking Reviews, and regular interaction with victims, the proportion of victims who drop out of our lengthy and traumatic justice system is high.

The next phase of the work is to hear directly from victims about their experiences and what may have led them to withdraw. This work aims to better understand when and crucially why victims withdraw from the justice system, with the aim of producing recommendations that will better support victims to stay engaged in the process.

There are two opportunities for victims and survivors to have their voices heard in this work; a survey and focus groups. The survey closes Friday 14th March. Focus groups will be held late March/beginning of April.

The Survey

The MOPAC have just launched a survey, in which seeks the views of victims/survivors who reported to the police but then decided to withdraw / drop out of the process – this can be at any stage of the justice system, from directly after reporting through to the trial.

Please share the survey with your networks and the victims/survivors you support. You can find posts from Claire on Twitter, Bluesky, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

You can access the survey here: www.londonvoice.org.uk/victimattrition

The Focus Groups

To gain a more in-depth understanding of victims’ experiences, the MOPAC are also looking to hold some in-depth focus groups, specifically for victims of:

  1. Domestic Abuse

  2. Hate Crime

  3. Serious Youth Violence

  4. Honour Based Abuse

  5. Rape and Sexual Offences

  6. Child Sexual Abuse

Again, the MOPAC are interested in speaking to those who reported the crime but then withdrew from the process.

If you, or someone you are supporting is interested in taking part in one of these focus groups, please email us at VictimsCommissioner@mopac.london.gov.uk
