Jon Cruddas MP and Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, Margaret Mullane, have joined forces to condemn the government’s watering down of promises to protect private renters.
Jon said “Over two years ago Government Ministers talked about ending no fault evictions of private tenants, unfortunately they have watered down their promise so that it has become almost meaningless.
The Government introduced a Bill in Parliament, but not only is it full of loopholes for landlords to exploit, but the Bill is not even being progressed through Parliament by the Government. As a consequence of this inaction, no fault evictions under the so-called Section 21 procedure continue to rise in number. Last year alone 300,000 private renters were evicted by landlords by this grossly unfair process.”
Margaret added “The Citizens Advice Bureau has been in contact with me on this issue. In June this year the CAB has helped over 2,000 people with Section 21 issues, the most in a single month on record and a 35% increase since June 2022.”
Margaret went on to say that the Bill before Parliament lacks teeth to protect private tenants and pointed to three areas where the Bill fails.
“First, the new ‘no fault’ grounds allow landlords to evict tenants if they say they want to sell the property or move family in, without providing any evidence. Second, landlords will be able to evict tenants using the new ‘no fault’ grounds after just 6 months of the tenancy. The third is unreasonable rent increases forcing tenants to move out. At a time when people are struggling with inflation and energy bills, rent increases are forcing tenants into ‘negative budgets’ and potential homelessness. This Bill is a sham, I want fairness and a level playing field for private renters.”
