Margaret Mullane, Labour PPC for Dagenham and Rainham, commented on worrying local unemployment figures released by the House of Commons Library this week.
Margaret said “In December 2023 there were 4,375 people in Dagenham and Rainham between the ages of 16 and 64 who were jobless and in receipt of unemployment benefit. This represents a local unemployment rate of 6.2%, this compares unfavourably with the UK level of 3.7%
Within the total are 715 18 to 24 year olds without work or not in education. Again, this is a higher level than the national figure for younger people at 7.8%, with the UK level at 4.9%.”
Margaret went on to say “What is particularly disturbing is the local unemployment trend. In the last year there has been a 390 rise in the number of people without jobs. Going back to just before the COVID pandemic struck, there has been an alarming 1,640 increase in Dagenham and Rainham.
This is further indictment of the total failure of 14 years of Tory Government. We are seeing public services from the NHS, Policing and vital council services stretched to breaking point and families struggling to make end meet. We desperately need a change of direction and that means a change of government that will prioritise ordinary families.”
