Advanced by Anneliese Midgley MP, the inclusion of clause 48 extends the offense of assaulting a retail worker to home delivery drivers. This amendment was inspired in part by the success of Deliveroo’s Right to Ride safety campaign. Throughout this initiative, Deliveroo collaborated with Anneliese Midgley MP, the GMB and Usdaw, and others to draw attention to the abuse faced by home delivery drivers while at work. The initiative highlighted the urgent need for stronger protections under the law, ensuring that delivery drivers are afforded the same legal safeguards as retail staff against harms endured during the course of their employment.
Margaret Mullane MP comments:“As the Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham, I am proud to back this important amendment. Delivery drivers are the backbone of our modern economy, they ensure that vital goods and services reach our homes every day, and ensure that our food and hospitality industry remains thriving. Yet far too often, they face unacceptable risks of violence and abuse simply for doing their jobs. By enshrining in law a specific
offense for assaulting delivery drivers, we send a clear message: attacks on workers who keep our communities running will not be tolerated. This amendment brings the essential protection and recognition to a group that is truly essential, and I am fully committed to supporting it.”
